The San Fernando Valley Branch of AAUW
top

The San Fernando Valley Branch is one of the best branches of AAUW with about 150 members. Located in the northwest corner of Los Angeles, California, it began in 1931 with six women who wanted to make a difference. We sponsor a large variety of events, issues, and interest groups. In addition to our monthly general meetings and fun fundraising events, we have groups involved in promoting public policy, mentoring, and a host of social and educational interest groups. Furthermore, our branch has always been a very active participant in the drive to open educational opportunities for women. In recent years, we have raised well over $10,000 each year. We have established three fellowships and three research and projects grants.

General Meetings
top

Monthly general meetings are generally held on the third Saturday of the month at various sites throughout the San Fernando Valley. They usually involve lunch and a speaker. Program topics include a variety of issues affecting women and the community such as universal health care, women of Iraq, ballot propositions and heart disease.

Community Outreach
top

The SFV branch has always been very committed to bringing about positive societal change through community service. Over the years we have supported CATHY (a foster care agency), Penny Lane (a facility for abused and emotionally disturbed youngsters), Women's Care Cottage, and Food Pantry, among other deserving endeavors. We are also members of the Women's Organization Coalition, LA Women's Legislative Committee, and AAUW's LA County Interbranch Council.

Educational Task Force
top

Currently, AAUW-SFV has two Educational Task Force projects: Brighter Horizons and Tech Trek.

Brighter Horizons

Brighter Horizons is an annual one-day event featuring a series of workshops which educated middle and high school girls about careers for women in math, science and engineering. The 2008 event was on Jan 26 at Pierce College.  You can view the the 2008 Brochure and Registration Form to see the workshops that were presented.

TechTrek

Tech Trek is a week-long math/science camp designed to develop interest, excitement and self-confidence in girls who will enter the eighth grad in the fall. It features hands-on activities in math, science and related fields at University campuses throughout California in July. Each year, AAUW-SFV raises money to sponsor 2-3 girls from the Valley to attend this camp.

Public Policy
top

The Public Policy Committee is concerned with all issues which affect the lives of women and their families. This includes areas concerning health, economic, sociological, educational, political, legal and individual rights. The focus is on the needs of women and girls for equity in these fields, which necessitates concern about equity in education and career development, reproductive choice, adequate child and dependent care, and freedom from violence and intimidation and from pay discrimination.
